Conversations about Art. Lecture: “Ukrainian Artists of the Second Half of the 19th Century”

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Ukraine continues its art project “Conversations about Art.”
Event Date: On August 21 (Thursday) at 7:00 PM, the next session will take place – an online lecture titled “Ukrainian Artists of the Second Half of the 19th Century.”

Our discussions about the history of art and the creative lives of prominent artists continue! We will build on the topic introduced in the previous lecture – the development of Ukrainian art in the 19th century and the work of our artists. In the second half of the 19th century, the number of talented Ukrainian artists grew significantly, yet almost all of them, regardless of their origins, place of birth, or the themes of their work, were claimed by the empire. Many are still referred to as “Russian artists.” In this lecture, we will explore how Ukrainian themes were reflected in the works of our artists and what made their paintings distinctive. How did their creative paths unfold under the conditions of that time? These and other topics will be examined during the lecture, and we will continue exploring them in future sessions dedicated to Ukrainian art.

At this art gathering, we will delve into the works of several distinctly different artists. These include Kostiantyn Trutovsky, a younger contemporary of Taras Shevchenko and a master of genre painting; Volodymyr Orlovsky, a landscape artist who brought the principles of the French Barbizon School to Ukrainian soil; as well as lesser-known works on Ukrainian themes by Ivan Aivazovsky, the celebrated painter of the sea and his native Crimea, and Arkhip Kuindzhi, an innovator in the landscape genre.

In upcoming lectures, we will continue our exploration of outstanding Ukrainian artists, journeying further into the fascinating and remarkable world of art.
