16th of September: the Museum of Modern Art of Ukraine features an exhibition of Italian artist Vittorio Giacomi.
The exhibition features a series of works representing the last two periods in the work of Giacomi. First of all it includes the Italian assemblages of 1990s, made with the use of the most different materials – wood, linen, paint, commodities. And the newest works of the so-called “Ukrainian period” (made in 2008-2010) during the stay of the artist in Lviv. They are characterized by a special figurativeness and the application of new materials of local origin. The artist uses household sponges of different color and shape bought in the urban or country stores which symbolize our environment in a quite an unexpected way, as well as the patterned-surface tissues, which may be associated with the festive outlines of a hospitable Ukrainian table. Besides, the compositions included the fragments of different construction materials turning the simple, at first sight, materials like scotch tape, tissues, or foam plastic into the elements of artistic expressiveness that were made esthetic by the creative consciousness of the master.
Besides, according to the Doctor of Fine Arts, Orest Golubets: “the new Ukrainian series of works by Vittorio Giacomi is the bright example of lifelike reaction of the artist on the Ukrainian environment, that he faced with, and its original reinterpretation using favorite pop-art forms”.
Performance “A monument to the strength” will be demonstrated by the artist at the opening of the exhibition.
The works by Vittorio Giacomi are kept in public and private collections of Rome, Napoli, Lausanne, Paris, Turin, Kazzino. These include the private collections of Federico Fellini, Juliette Mazzini, Nino Manfredi, Giovanni Ralli, Peppino Di Kapri, Renato Karosone.
The artist has been living and working in Ukraine since 2006.
The Museum has issued a catalogue of works by the Italian artist on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition.
The organizers of the exhibition believe that the figure of the Italian artist, Vittorio Giacomi, who decided to settle down in Ukraine in the middle of his life will make a special interest with the Ukrainian audience.
